Expositie Theo Jansen

On behalf of Kunstmuseum Den Haag, we contributed our ideas and provided lighting advice for the solo exhibition of Theo Jansen. An iconic exhibition centred on the world-famous Strandbeesten, in which art, technology and movement come together.

Expositie Theo Jansen

The exhibition shows impressive, skeleton-like constructions that move independently on wind power. Theo Jansen's Strandbeesten regularly stroll along the coastline of The Hague and enjoy international fame. His work travels all over the world and forms a unique interplay of art, physics and imagination.

A special part of the museum is Animaris Omnia, which has been on display in the Garden Hall since 2018 and is part of the permanent collection. In addition, the solo exhibition Strandbeesten – a new generation offers an in-depth look at the latest developments in Jansen's work.

In this exhibition, lighting was essential to show both the scale and the refined mechanics of the Strandbeesten to their best advantage. The light had to support the sculptures without disturbing their dynamism and movement. Through careful lighting advice, a balance was found between drama, legibility and spatial experience.

The lighting reinforces the sculptural quality of the Strandbeesten and makes it possible to experience the complex constructions up close. Visitors gain insight into both the aesthetic design and the ingenious functioning of these fascinating creatures.

A project in which light plays a crucial role in telling the story behind one of the Netherlands' most prominent artists.
