Km21

The exhibition Upaya by Mickey Yang at KM21 offers a layered and thought-provoking look at the way Asian philosophies and spiritual practices are interpreted within the Western pursuit of self-development. With subtlety and a touch of humour, Yang explores themes such as craftsmanship, language and cultural appropriation in her first solo museum exhibition.

Km21

In her work, Yang combines robust, earthy materials such as wood and metal with fleeting elements like smoke, reflections and sound. This tension-filled combination results in a multidimensional experience in which the temporary and the lasting reinforce one another.

Everyday objects, including a plasma ball, a mosquito coil and the sound of a singing bowl, are used as carriers of meaning. They make visible how Eastern philosophies are sometimes deeply embraced in the West, but can also degenerate into ironic or commercialised interpretations.

The exhibition invites visitors not only to look but also to reflect. Upaya shows how cultural ideas travel, transform and take on new meanings depending on context and perspective. The result is a richly layered exhibition that appeals both intellectually and sensorially and fits perfectly within KM21's experimental and inquisitive character.

A powerful museum presentation in which concept, material and experience come together.
